What We Use — Sled Dog Gear & Harnesses for 7 Malamutes

There is a romanticized idea of what it means to run a pack of Alaskan Malamutes in the sweeping Swedish wilderness. Usually, it involves pristine snow, howling under the aurora, and effortless gliding through silent forests.

Then there is the reality: 7 massive, primitive dogs putting enormous torque on harnesses, leashes, and sleds. If a piece of equipment is weak, they will break it. If a harness doesn't fit right, they will chafe.

We are constantly asked what gear we use to run the Snövind pack. Here is the exact equipment we trust every day.

1. The Everyday Anchor: Julius-K9 IDC Powerharness

For daily walks, managing the dogs in the yard, and general control, we rely on the Julius-K9 IDC Powerharness. Malamutes are incredibly strong, and the ergonomic design of the Julius-K9 distributes the pulling force across their chest rather than their neck.

The heavy-duty handle on top is arguably the most important feature. When you need to physically stop a 45kg dog from lunging at a wild hare, that handle gives you the leverage you need.

2. The Professional Puller: Non-Stop Dogwear Freemotion 5.0

When it is time to work—whether that is pulling the ATV, a sled, or bikejöring—we switch to professional pulling harnesses. The Non-Stop Dogwear Freemotion 5.0 is the gold standard.

Unlike standard harnesses, the Y-shaped front allows completely free shoulder movement, and it pulls from the correct anatomical point on the dog's back to maximize power while protecting their spine and joints.

3. Shock Absorption: Non-Stop Bungee Leash

If you attach a Malamute to a static line on a bike or ATV, the sudden acceleration will damage both your vehicle and their joints. A proper bungee line is non-negotiable.

We use the Non-Stop Bungee Leash (2.8m). It absorbs the shock of their explosive starts and keeps the line taut so it doesn't tangle in the wheels.

4. Joint Health: YuMOVE Supplements

Gear isn't just about what they wear; it's about internal maintenance. Pulling heavy loads in freezing conditions takes a toll on a dog's joints.

We supplement the entire pack's diet with YuMOVE Joint Supplements (Glucosamine, chondroitin, and green-lipped mussel). It keeps our older dogs moving comfortably and protects the joints of our younger pullers.
