Are Alaskan Malamutes Good Family Dogs? An Honest Answer

The short answer is yes — with the right family. Malamutes are incredibly loyal, gentle with children, and deeply devoted. But they're not the breed for everyone. Here's our honest take from raising 7 Malamutes as a family.

The Good: What Makes Them Amazing

Malamutes are pack animals at heart. They consider their family their pack, and they'll protect and love every member of it. Our dogs are gentle with visitors, patient with handling, and endlessly affectionate. Angel will lean against anyone who sits down, offering her signature "Malamute hug."

The Reality Check

They're big, strong dogs that need consistent training from day one. A 40 kg Malamute who hasn't learned leash manners will walk YOU. They shed — a lot. They can be stubborn (some would say "independent thinkers"). And they need space and exercise.

"A well-trained Malamute is one of the best family dogs you can have. An untrained one is a 40 kg bulldozer with opinions."

Malamutes and Children

Generally excellent — they're patient and gentle. However, due to their size, supervision with small children is essential. Teach kids to respect the dog's space, and teach the dog to be calm around children. The bond that forms is beautiful and lifelong.

Making It Work

Commit to training, provide adequate exercise, accept the fur, and embrace the chaos. If your family is active, outdoorsy, and ready for a loyal companion, a Malamute could be perfect.
