How Much Exercise Does an Alaskan Malamute Really Need?

Alaskan Malamutes were bred to haul heavy loads across frozen landscapes. That heritage means they need real, structured exercise — but maybe not as much as you think. Here's what actually works based on our experience with 7 Malamutes.

The Daily Minimum

Adult Malamutes need at least 1.5-2 hours of activity per day. This doesn't have to be intense — a solid morning walk (45 min) plus an afternoon session works well. Our pack runs on a routine: morning walk, midday rest, afternoon training or free time.

Beyond Walking: Activities They Love

Malamutes thrive with purpose-driven exercise. Pulling (bikejoring, skijoring, or sled), hiking with a pack, and swimming are all excellent. Our Oden is at his happiest on the ATV trails, pulling with focus and determination.

Mental Exercise Matters Too

A physically tired Malamute who's mentally bored will still find trouble. Puzzle feeders, scent work, training sessions, and socialization all count. Luna in our pack is the perfect example — she needs her "inspector rounds" every day to feel satisfied.

Seasonal Adjustments in Sweden

In summer, we shift to early morning and late evening activities to avoid heat. Malamutes have thick double coats designed for -40°C, not +25°C. In winter, they come alive — longer runs, more energy, pure joy in the snow.
