Lokie and Luna — Skärplinge Snowy Day

Some of our most cherished memories don't come from big events or milestone moments. They come from quiet winter walks through familiar forests, with dogs who know the trail and the person beside them better than anything in the world.

A Skärplinge Winter Morning

This was December 2022 — one of those crisp, still Swedish mornings where the forest looks like it's been dipped in white frosting. The kind of day where your breath hangs in the air and every footstep crunches through fresh snow.

It was just me, Luna, and Lokie. No ATV, no harnesses, no training schedule. Just a walk. Three sets of footprints through the Skärplinge forest trails — two dogs and their human, moving at whatever pace felt right.

"These two are inseparable on the trail. Luna patrols ahead, inspecting every deviation in the path. Lokie charges forward with that focused energy of his. Together they're a perfect team — even when they're not pulling anything."

The Original Pack Members

Luna and Lokie are two of the original members of the Snövind pack. By winter 2022, they were already established — experienced, bonded, and completely at home in these woods. While the younger dogs would come later (Oden and Angel in 2023, Pella later still), this was a time when the pack was smaller and the walks were quieter.

There's something special about those early days. Before the three-team training schedule, before the ATV runs, before the kennel renovation — it was just walks in the woods. Luna checking every corner of the trail. Lokie bounding ahead, his excitement never dimming. The basics of what would eventually become Snövind Malamutes as it is today.

The Photos That Started It All

This was also one of the first walks we photographed properly for the website. The snow-covered forest, two beautiful Malamutes, and the quiet magic of a Swedish winter — these images became some of our earliest and most popular content. They showed people what Alaskan Malamutes in their element really look like.

Not in a show ring, not in a kennel — but in the snow, where they belong. Ears up, tails high, eyes bright. Doing what they were built to do.

❄️ A Note About Lokie

Since this throwback, Lokie has sadly sustained a paw injury that means he can no longer pull a sled harness. But he still runs free alongside all three training teams — off-lead, keeping his spirit and energy alive on every run. He may not pull anymore, but he's still very much part of every training session. Once a runner, always a runner.

Looking back at these photos now, three years later, I'm reminded of how far we've come — and how important it is to appreciate the simple moments. A snowy trail, two loyal dogs, and the silence of a Swedish forest.

That's all you need. ❄️🐾
